Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success, Building Blocks for a Better Life
Legendary UCLA Bruin basketball coach John Wooden enjoyed phenomenal success as a coach, winning 7 National Championships in a row and 10 overall. But his effort to define success began many years before he arrived on the UCLA campus. In high school, he was tasked with writing a paper on the definition of success. He continued to mull the question long after he completed the paper. As he continued his effort to define success, he recalled two principles passed to him by his dad: 1. Don’t try to be better than someone else. 2. Always try to be the best you can be. Ultimately, he arrived at the definition he had long sought. “Success is the peace of mind that is the direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did you best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.” He then developed his Pyramid of Success using blocks and mortar that could withstand biblical scrutiny.
