A Thousand Acres

Description Additional info Product reviews

Winner of the 1991 National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction and the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.  A Thousand Acres  retells Shakespear's King Lear.  It is set on a 1000-acres family farm in Iowa.  The story is told through the oldest daughter's point of view.  Smiley writing in this book raises tension at times to almost unbearable-- but always credible -- extremes. In the process, she raises profound questions about human conduct and moral responsibility, especially in the context of family relationships and the guilt and bitterness those relationships can foster.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1991. 1st edition, 371 pages. Hardcover with Dustjacket Both book and dustajcket are in FINE condition. SIGNED by Smiley.
