Mike Cox included this 2-vol set in More Basic Texas Books, his book that built upon John Jenkins’ annotated bibliography, Basic Texas Books, It is one of cornerstone books about Texas’ Big Bend region. Marfa, county seat of Presidio, has become a become a mecca of sorts for for aspiring artists and other creative types. The atmosphere results, in part, from the influence of renowned artist Donald Judd. At the same time, Presidio County remains a frontier of sorts. It is a land of stark, and often startling, beauty with rolling mountains, rugged foothills, open vistas where antelope roam and, of course, the Rio Grande. Even though explorers and other travelers have been traversing the land for hundreds of years, in many respects, it remains untamed. The land can be harsh. Consequently, people have to harmonize their lives with it. And they do.
