During World War II, the Germans launched a U-boat campaign in the Gulf of Mexico, creating chaos and fear along the Gulf Coast.  America was initially ill-prepared for the Germans onslaught.  As a result, 56 Allied merchant ships were sunk and 14 more damaged, many of them oil tankers.  In turn, this impeded the transport of oil and much-needed military equipment to Europe.  Eventually, the U.S. was able to effectively counter the U-Boat offensive and the campaign was ended in late 1943 but not before it had brought the war uncomfortably close to home.
