This book is set in West Texas in 1906. Times are changing. The main character, Hewey Calloway comes to realize the way of life he once knew is gone and the time for mature responsibility has arrived. The story is told with humor. In fact, this book is capable of causing audible laughter. It was made into a made-for-television movie in 1995 starring Tommy Lee Jones. Kelton wrote over forty novels. This is one of his best.
