Billy Dixon was a very good shot.  It has been posited that his marksmanship inspired Larry McMurtry when writing Lonesome Dove.  Dixon was credited with killing a warrior from nearly a mile away at the 2nd Battle of Adobe Walls.  You may recall in Lonesome Dove the scene when Comancheros attacked Gus who took shelter behind his dead horse in a buffalo wallow. When one of the ne’er-do-wells, believing himself to be beyond the range of Gus’ gun, begins taunting Gus to entertain his fellow miscreants, Gus plugs him in the gut with an improbable but very well-placed long-range shot.  Because Dixon was a crack shot, he was led to trade in buffalo hides. He hunted the Texas Panhandle in the early and mid-1870's.  Dixon also worked for General Nelson Miles as a scout. In fact, Dixon received the Congressional Medal of Honor while serving as a civilian scout.   He was present when the Germaine sisters were rescued from the Cheyenne (perhaps contributing again to Lonesome Dove in the way McMurtry envisioned Laurie’s rescue from Blue Duck and his cutthroat confederates).  Dixon died in 1913.
