Jeff Davis County, Texas

Description Additional info Product reviews

One of Texas’ most scenic counties, much Texas history has occurred in Jeff Davis County. An important frontier fort – Fort Davis – is located in the county. Buffalo Soldiers, Company H of the Tenth U.S. Cavalry, were posted at Fort Davis. The campaign to capture the Apache Chief Victorio launched from Fort Davis. The first black graduate from West Point, Henry O. Flipper, was court-marshalled and drummed out of the army at Fort Davis (the benefit of hindsight indicates a double standard was applied to Flipper). Also noteworthy, the county was (and is) home to several noteworthy ranches, is home of McDonald Observatory located high atop Mount Locke in the Davis Mountains. Among the obscure, yet still very noteworthy, occurrences in the county: Valentine, a community in the county, was in 1931 site of Texas’ most powerful earthquake to date.

Fort Davis: Fort Davis Historical Society, 1993. 1st edition. 676 pages. Hardcover book with some scuffing to the outer edge of the front board, corners are slightly bumped, abrasions to the rear board and minor soling to the beige colored boards. Overall, VERY GOOD.
