History of the Chisum War or Life of Ike Fridge, Stirring Events of Cowboy Life on the Frontier

Description Additional info Product reviews

A very hard-to-find book, particularly in the condition of this copy. In fact, J Frank Dobie said it was “unprocurable”. Obviously not unprocurable but still, very hard-to-find. Dobie thought highly of the book. It is the story of Ike Fridge who “became a Chisum cowboy at the age of fourteen. He worked on the Chisum ranches in Denton County, Texas, on the Concho in Texas, and, finally, on the Pecos in New Mexico. In a strange twist, it could be said this book caused Fridge’s death. Once published, Fridge filled two large suitcases with copies to sell to friends in Seymour, Texas. When changing trains in Wichita Falls, he aggravated an old bullet wound, presumably from the effort required to carry the heavy suitcases. He died a few days later in a Wichita Falls hospital.

Electra, Texas: privately published, 1927. 1st edition. 70 pages. Original printed wrappers in FINE condition. Housed in a custom clamshell.
