College Station: Texas A&M University Press, 1997. 1st Thus. 202 pages. Softcover in FINE condition.
Originally published in 1847, this book written by a teacher turned soldier follows the First Regiment of Missouri Mounted Volunteers on its 850-mile march from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas down the Santa Fe Trail into Mexico. In addition to Hughes observances about the grueling march, he also provides excellent first-hand accounts of two battles: Battle of Brazito outside El Paso and the Battle of Sacramento outside Chihuahua. This book has been described as “one of the most colorful personal accounts of the Mexican War.”
