With this book, Duane made a significant historic contribution because the material in this book had been virtually lost for nearly three hundred years. The book translates into English, and provides additional commentary on, the writings of Alonso de León, Juan Bautista Chapa, and Fernando Sánchez de Zamora, all of whom were eyewitnesses to, if not participants in, Spanish settlement activities. They provide valuable insight into Spanish motives in establishing colonies in Northern Mexico and Texas during the 16th and 17th centuries and the methods the Spanish used.
