Austin: State House Press, 1993. Reprint (the 1st edition was published in 1912). 394 pages. Hardcover with dustjacket. Book and dustjacket are both in FINE condition.
This is the first State House Press edition of an old-fashioned, blood-and-guts history of the Indian Wars in Texas from 1819 to 1845. New notes for this edition by Erik Mason. DeShields extensive use of primary source material including turn-of-the-century interviews and correspondence with early Texas Rangers and frontiersmen who were yet living at the time of writing make this work invaluable. DeShields’ held the view ultimate victory over the Indian was inevitable, even predetermined. Still, DeShields manages to convey elements of humanity to everyone involved in the struggles.
