A Comprehensive History of Refugio County from Aboriginal Times to 1953

Description Additional info Product reviews

This is a Basic Texas Book.  About it, John Jenkins wrote:  “Without doubt, this is the most comprehensive compilation on the history of any Texas county…[and] its scope reaches far beyond Refugio County.” A very handsome set of this very hard-to-find title.

Woodsboro, Texas:  The Rooke Foundation, Inc., 1953 (vol 1) and 1955 (vol 2).  1st edition of this two volume set.  Vol 1 has 596 numbered pages and Vol 2 has 633 pages.  Both are hardcover, identically bound, and of uniform color. No dustjackets, as issued.  Both books are in VERY GOOD condition.  Vol 1 has a prior owner’s (Llerena Friend) bookplate on the front pastedown and her name written in pencil at the top of the front free endpaper.  There is also a very small bookplate of “A.V. Emmott ‘Bookbinding’ Houston” affixed to the rear pastedown of both volume 1 and 2.  Both volumes have been blind embossed with Friend’s private library seal. The front pastedown of Vol 2 is discolored at its extreme edge and the glue affixing it to the front board has lost its adhesion it places and the Title page shows some age-toning.    The prior owner, Llenera Friend, was the founding director of the Barker Center for Texas History at the University of Texas. She also authored Sam Houston, the Great Designer.
