The declaration is printed on page 1. The text of the declaration is introduced, in part, as follows: “The following is a hasty translation of he principal parts of the Declaration of Independence by the province of Texas, a member of the great Mexican Republic…proclaimed on the fourth of April, in the city of Santo Antonio de Behai, when a provisional form of government as adopted.” Written by hand in pencil on page 1 above the periodical’s banner: “The exceedingly Rare First Texas Decla. Of Ind. 1813”.

Texas’ first declaration of independence published in the July 17, 1813 issue (No. 20 of Vol IV) of The Weekly Register, Baltimore, Maryland. The Weekly Register was printed and published by H. Niles. The Weekly Register enjoyed wide circulation in its day. Its emphasis was politics and current events. It published until 1849 after which time it became The National Register. There are 20 pages in this issue. The periodical is bound in decorative boards with a leather spine on which there is gold lettering. The periodical is age-spotted and toned. The condition of the original publication is GOOD and it is protected by the binding, the condition of which is FINE.
