A quintessential Texan, Neighbors took part in the defense of the Republic, the exploration of West Texas, the building of the railroads and the administration of Indian affairs. He was killed by a shotgun blast in the back on the streets of Belknap, the town, about one-half mile East of Fort Belknap. It was thought by some that he was assassinated because of his attitudes about the Indians. Many thought him too enlightened. His killer was never found.
