Common Sense

Description Additional info Product reviews

Thomas Paine, a British-born political activist and one of America’s Founding Fathers, published Common Sense in January 1776 to advocate for American independence from Great Britain. Using plain, persuasive language that resonated with ordinary colonists, Paine dismantled the traditional arguments for monarchy and the divine right of kings. The work argued that the British system was fundamentally corrupt and that an island could not reasonably rule a continent indefinitely. By framing the conflict as a struggle for universal human rights rather than a local tax dispute, he transformed public opinion and galvanized support for the Continental Congress. Ultimately, this influential document served as the intellectual spark that shifted the colonial aim from reconciliation to the pursuit of a new, independent republic.
