The original members numbered one hundred sixty, including many whose fame would come later as leaders of the opposing armies in the U.S. Civil War. In many respects this book is their story, a story of young men bonded by the shared dangers and hardships of war against a common enemy, followed by the later experience of each becoming the enemy of another, and the subsequent reunification after the Civil War.
